Open Editions

Durable books from fragile source material.

I help organizations preserve and circulate ideas they already believe matter by turning selected talks, essays, papers, transcripts, and archives into professionally edited, reader-ready digital editions.

Open Editions is a preservation and publishing service from Thorn Publishing LLC, led by J. Thorn—an author, editor, publisher, and former history educator with more than two decades of classroom teaching experience.

What this is

An Open Edition is not a transcript dump, a PDF export, or a cosmetic repackaging of material already online.

It is a structured publishing package designed for reading, citation, preservation, distribution, and reuse. The work begins with material an organization has already selected and cleared. My role is to turn that material into a coherent edition that can outlast the platform where it first appeared.

Your website may hold the material. An Open Edition makes it portable, coherent, citeable, and easier to preserve.

What kinds of material fit

Spoken material

  • Talks and lectures
  • Conference presentations
  • Interviews and oral histories
  • Video essays or recorded explainers

Written material

  • Essay series
  • Blog archives
  • White papers and reports
  • Founder letters or institutional writings

The common problem

The material already exists, but it is scattered, difficult to read, hard to cite, dependent on a website, trapped in audio or video, or not yet assembled into a form that can travel.

What an Open Edition can include

Edition files

  • Markdown source file
  • EPUB for ordinary reading
  • PDF for stable presentation
  • Optional print-ready files when appropriate

Preservation package

  • Metadata
  • Provenance note
  • License file
  • Version notes or changelog

Distribution support

  • Repository-ready files
  • Reader delivery options
  • Retail marketplace preparation when useful
  • Suggested citation and description copy

Editorial work

  • Structure and sequencing
  • Light developmental editing
  • Formatting and cleanup
  • Faithful adaptation across formats

How the process works

You select the material. The organization identifies what it believes is worth preserving and confirms that rights and permissions are clear.
We define the edition. I prepare a short treatment describing the intended audience, structure, source boundaries, formats, and review process.
I build the edition. The source material is adapted, assembled, edited, formatted, and prepared as a finished digital publication.
You review for fidelity. The organization or designated reviewer checks for factual mistakes, material distortion, omissions, rights issues, or attribution problems.
The edition is released and handed off. The final files, metadata, and preservation package are delivered to the organization for publication, distribution, and long-term stewardship.

Example

A previous Bitcoin-related adaptation transformed Joe Bryan’s video presentation What’s the Problem? into a free ebook distributed through Amazon and other digital platforms. The goal was simple: preserve the original message while making it available to readers who would not otherwise watch the video.

What this is not

Not content marketing

Open Editions is not designed to create more noise, feed an algorithm, or turn every idea into a campaign.

Not permanent custody

I do not offer “forever storage.” I create preservation-ready editions and handoff packages that reduce dependence on any single website, platform, or account.

Not automated conversion

AI can process text. An edition still requires judgment, structure, fidelity, production experience, and responsibility for the public artifact.

Not canon selection

The organization decides what matters. I help make the selected material durable, readable, and ready to circulate.

Start with the material

The best first conversation is not about making a book. It is about material your organization already values but worries may not last in its current form.

Send a brief note describing the source material, its current format, who owns or controls the rights, and what you hope the edition would make possible.
